October 29th 2015,
Dear Patrons, Donors and Members,
I would like to thank each one of you on behalf of Bharatiya Sangeeta Sangham for your continued support and making the year 2015 a grand success. In this regard it’s my pleasure to present the annual president’s report for the year 2015.
We started the year 2015 with a Youth Encouragement Program (YEP) on January 31st as a part of BSS commitment to encourage kids. We had Dr. Narasaiah’s workshop and mini-concerts by Kum. Arthi Ramachandran and Smt. Divyalakshmi Iyer followed by a “Raga Hunt” for kids. Kids and community members’ enthusiastic participation made YEP a grand success. Our thanks to Dr. Smt. Anjana Srinivasan and Sri Luxan Sivanesan for their able support in accompaniment.
Our first concert was “An Indian Guitar Journey” on February 14th by Sri Prasanna accompanied by Sri Arvind Venkatraman on the Mridangam and Sri Ramana Indrakumar on the Ghatam. This concert was well appreciated and attended by diverse audience. We also had the privilege to conduct a workshop with Prasanna on the Guitar. The workshop was not only useful in understanding the nuances of the instrument but also resulted in our Montreal artist Sri Joy Anandasivam working with Prasanna to present a joint concluding piece at the concert.
We had an opportunity to showcase our organization with a booth at the Indo-Canadian Organization of Montreal (ICOM) Holi Hai event in Vaudreuil-Dorion on March 7th. The booth was well decorated by volunteers. This presentation was very well received.
Thyagaraja day was conducted on April 25th which was successful. With an increase in the number of participants, we thank all the adults and kids for their enthusiastic participation. A new BSS banner was made this year, thanks to Divyalakshmi Iyer and committee members for their efforts in the banner design.
Our audience was delighted with Vid. Dr. Sowmya’s vocal concert “Eternal Bliss” on May 9th accompanied by Vid. Embar Kannan on the violin, Vid. Neyveli Narayanan on the Mridangam, Sri Chandrasekara Sharma on the Ghatam and Sri Bertrand Licart on the Tambura. The reviews were very positive. Dr. Sowmya taught the participants a song at a well-attended workshop the evening before the concert. This song was sung along with the audience as the concluding piece of the concert.
We ended the spring season with a “Carnatic Violin Duo” concert on May 23rd by Vid. Nagai Muralidharan and Vid. Nagai Sriram accompanied by Vid. Mannargudi Easwaran on Mridangam and Sri Karthik Venkataraman on the Kanjira. This concert was indeed an “experience” as mentioned by the audience.
Owing to personal reasons, Divyalakshmi Iyer expressed her inability to continue in the committee. Her resignation was accepted on May 31st.
We had our first Donor-sponsored concert “Raaga Ravali” a Veena-Violin duet on August 30th by Vid. Sri G.R.S Murthy with Smt. Anjana Srinivasan on the violin and Sri Luxan Sivanesan on the Mridangam.
The donor-sponsored concert model was approved by the committee in response to requests for additional concerts by our patrons under the BSS Banner. Donor-sponsored concerts are concerts at no additional cost to BSS. These concerts are possible due to the donations received from members of the community for the specific concerts.
We were proud to present the Canadian premier of dance spectacle “Under the Banyan” on September 27th by Sri Shijith Nambiar and group. The audience was enthralled by the dance spectacle and thoroughly enjoyed it. Following the concert, a workshop was conducted with Sri Shijith Nambiar. Several dance teachers and students participated in it. The dance piece taught by Shijith was cherished by participants.
Our last concert for the year was a vocal concert on October 17th by Vid. Rama Krishna Murthy accompanied by Vid. R.K. Shriram Kumar on the Violin, Vid. Arun Prakash on the Mridangam and Kum. Shruthi Raman on the Tambura. This concert was reviewed as “Outstanding and memorable”. We followed the concert with a workshop with Sri Shriram Kumar. The workshop was attended by adults and children and a song was learnt. The song learnt will be presented at Composers’ day
To our 2015 Donor Pass holders , we were able to bring a complimentary entry to a vocal concert of Smt. Sankari Krishnan in Ottawa on October 30th. We got an encouraging response from BSS members to attend the concert. Collaboration between BSS and SICA of this kind is crucial for presenting a wide range of concerts to both of its members.
We conclude this year’s events with Composers’ day and the Annual General meeting on November 21st.
Events in the year 2015 would not have been possible without your support, encouragement and suggestions and I would like to thank all of you once again.
Moving forward, we have to take important decisions for the events in 2016 with due consideration to rising costs of operation. Your continued support is crucial to the success of BSS.
I also would like to thank all the volunteers for their support and help in concert arrangements and logistics. Last but not the least, I would like to thank all the committee members for their dedication and hard work.
President, Bharatiya Sangeetha Sangham
